Bunsen - In Heidelberg

How many of us have used a Bunson Burner?  We used it in chemistry, biology, and almost with any science project where we needed to heat up a flask of some kind. I never knew the burner was named after someone.  Although, Bunsen wasn't a chemist they have a stature to his honor in front of the pyschology department at the University.

There is one of these statues on each side of the square Bunsen stands in. Couple of the web sites wonder as to what they have to do with anything let alone be here with Bunsen.  I for one don't really care.  Could be they had these and no where else to put them or with Bunsen being a pyschologist would concur the meaning of them if they were in your mind.  Anyway, the kids like them I couldn't stay long enough for the kids to get off them to get a picture of just the statue. Wonder how their teacher that took them there explains the meaning of their being there.

Here's the surrounding area from the square.

Schloss Heidelberg - The Castle part 3

Didn't know I was going to move on to a part 3 of the castle anymore than I was going to a part 2.  So best move down to part 1 and work up this blog topic of the Heidelberg castle.
You can see in the next few shots where the castle was tore up for it's building materials.

View of Old Town from the castle wall.

Heidelberg, Germany

Which do you supposed came first the house or the parking garage? Obvious of course, but what a neat house in a really unlikely spot.

Now the shot I promised a couple postings ago.  Guess which car is ours.

The trek back down to the car.

With the end in sight we say good-bye to the castle. It was fun, but I have to say that by this point my feet were smarting.  What can I say - got to lose some weight. Ha...

Schloss Heidelberg - The Castle part 2

Had I realized I was going to have to do the castle posting in two parts I would have done part 2 first. So, best viewed if you go down to Part 1 then look at this one.  Not that it matters all that much, but our travel through the castle is pretty much in order with the pictures.  In this post we found they have a elaborate pharmacy museum in one wing of the castle.  The pictures are here.  The wouldn't allow flash camera shots so a couple pics are a little blurry. But, I still like them enough not to delete them.

Ssh, don't tell anyone, but I sneaked in a flash on this shot. This concludes the Pharmacy Museum.
Now for a few more shots outside the castle.

Still have a numer of pictures to go so on to part 3.

Schloss Heidelberg - The Castle part 1

After the market area in old town we headed up the hill to the Heidelberg Castle.  We saw a walkway up the steep side of the castle, the side that faces the Rhine river.  Parking on the street we started up the walkway and it was steep.  Had we continued we would have come around to the level side of the castle and would have had a short walk to get into it.  Well, no matter we can always use a little exercise. There is a lot of reconstruction going on to bring the castle back into shape.  I found it interesting that at one point a couple centuries ago after the castle had been abandoned that the folks down in Heidelberg used it as a quarry for building materials to build their houses and businesses. You can see in some of these pictures towers and walls that have been torn apart for the bricks. Now for some pictures.

This is one side of the wine casket.  It goes on through the wall to the otherside. This is the small one.

That's the big one as you can see people walking on it.  Guess this guy liked his wine.

The way down from on top of the big wine casket.

Here you can see the other end of the large wine casket in the earlier picture.
