Schloss Heidelberg - The Castle part 1

After the market area in old town we headed up the hill to the Heidelberg Castle.  We saw a walkway up the steep side of the castle, the side that faces the Rhine river.  Parking on the street we started up the walkway and it was steep.  Had we continued we would have come around to the level side of the castle and would have had a short walk to get into it.  Well, no matter we can always use a little exercise. There is a lot of reconstruction going on to bring the castle back into shape.  I found it interesting that at one point a couple centuries ago after the castle had been abandoned that the folks down in Heidelberg used it as a quarry for building materials to build their houses and businesses. You can see in some of these pictures towers and walls that have been torn apart for the bricks. Now for some pictures.

This is one side of the wine casket.  It goes on through the wall to the otherside. This is the small one.

That's the big one as you can see people walking on it.  Guess this guy liked his wine.

The way down from on top of the big wine casket.

Here you can see the other end of the large wine casket in the earlier picture.
